The Disciple, Part 2.
Can we have the mind of the Messiah, and if so, how? We must first be a disciple of the Messiah. Mathew 28:19 says, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations.”
To be a true disciple of the Messiah we must be His pupil. Matthew 10:24-25 tells us that we must learn from the Master, for one is not greater than his teacher, but as Luke 6:40 tells us, “when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.” We can not just believe His Words, but we must actually put them into practice. A true disciple is not just a hearer of the Word but a doer as James 1:22-24 tells us, “But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.”
It is not good enough just to say that you believe in the Messiah because if we believe in Him then we will act like Him, and we will follow in His footsteps, living out His teachings.
Luke 14:26-27 tells us this, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.”
We will actually then be like Him, for He will be our example. Paul tells us this in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of the Messiah.” This is a true disciple. The word believe in the Hebrew in which this text was written means the same as amen. We read that Abraham believed in God and it was credited to him as righteousness, Genesis 15:6. The Hebrew word for amen, which is to believe, is the same word used for firm, like one who drives a tent peg into firm ground to hold his tent. If the ground is not firm the stake will pull out and the tent will collapse. So true of faith, if it is not firm the wind will come and blow it down. This is what Matthew 7:26-27 tells us, “And everyone who hears these Words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
So for Abraham to believe God he had to be firm not only in his faith in God but also his obedience to God. James 2:14-26 tells us this, “Faith without works is dead.” So what does this all have to do with having the mind of the Messiah? Well, if we are a true disciple of Messiah in not only our faith but our obedience, imitating Him in every way as a true disciple would, then in doing these things we will know just what He would say or do in all situations. This is a true disciple as the people of Yeshua’s day would have known. Today there are so many denominations with so many interpretations that we have lost the true meaning of discipleship. We have lost our way and so we can not follow in His footsteps because that seems foreign to us to not to be like the world and yet, live in the world, picking up our cross and following Him, giving one’s life for another. Even the thought of miracles and signs and wonders are foreign to us, not because God does not do these things, but because we do not have that firm faith and belief in God. To do such things we must be vessels in God’s hand, and if that was so, we would have the mind of Yeshua. 1 Corinthians 2:11-16 says, “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Messiah”.
You may think that you do not have to have the mind of Messiah, but if you belong to Him then it is a must. John 10:1-5,7 says this, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”.. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”
If you are not a true disciple of the Messiah, then you will not only not hear His voice, but you will not follow Him. Matthew 7:15 tells us this, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” This is why so many believers end up following false teachers, because so many teachers and pastors are wolves in sheep’s clothing, and the church is full of them. We must be doers of the Word. We must deny ourselves and pick up our cross and follow Messiah. If we do not let go of this world, and its ways, then that makes us enemies to God, James 4:4.
“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Messiah Yeshua is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” 2 Corinthians 13:5.
The world is full of deception that is why it is important to have the mind of Messiah.
