The Coming Sword

The Bible speaks about the second coming of the Messiah in Revelation 19:11-16

It says this,  “And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.  His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.  He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.  And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.  From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.  And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”’

Why would the Messiah have a sword in His mouth versus in His hand? We know that the armor of God tells us this in Ephesians 6:17,  “And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

So is the sword in His mouth the same sword that we are to take into the battle? Does this mean that we are to put the sword into our mouths? Isaiah speak about this in Isaiah 49: 2, “He has made My mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of His hand He has concealed Me; And He has also made Me a sharpened arrow, He has hidden Me in His quiver.”

Isaiah 51:16, “And I have put My Words in your mouth and have covered you with the shadow of My hand, to ]establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’”

Isaiah 59:21, “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD: My Spirit who is upon you, and My Words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from now and forever.”

We know that God is able to put His Words in our mouths. In Deuteronomy 18:18, God says this, “ I will raise up for them a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them everything that I command him.”

Psalm 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Jeremiah 1:9 also says,  “Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put My Words in your mouth.”

But as we see, God’s Word can be fire. Jeremiah 5:14, “ Therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of armies says: “Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making My Words fire in your mouth, and this people wood, and it will consume them.”

Hosea 6:5 tells us, “Therefore I have cut them in pieces by the prophets; I have slain them by the Words of My mouth; and the judgments on you are like the light that shines.”

Hebrews 4:12-13 say this,  “For the Word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom we must answer.”

God’s Word is powerful, and we must tremble at His Word.

Isaiah 66:1-2 says, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,’ says the Lord. ‘But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My Word’”

With His mouth He can build up, or He can tear down.  When we speak God’s Word it is just as powerful. Yes, by His Word we too, must protect those who need protection, those who are in need of healing or deliverance, those who need to come to the saving knowledge of God. But we can only do that if we speak the truth. God’s Word can only be spoken in truth by the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit is truth.

John 16:12-15 says, “ I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time.  But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.  He will glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you.  All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.”

Beware of false prophets and teachers who do not speak God’s truth. One day the Messiah will return, and He will divide the sheep from the goats with a spoken Word from His mouth.  We must pick up the Sword of the Spirit, and place it in our mouths, not in our hands, because it is not a club, and follow in Messiah’s footsteps, fighting the spiritual battles that need to be fought every day. Remember, Ephesians 6:12 says, For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

So pick up your Sword in the Spirit, and pick up your cross, and follow Messiah today
