Taking Hold Of The Tree Of Life

We want to start by looking at the Scriptures about the Tree of Life Genesis 2 :8-9, 16-17 says this, “The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.  Out of the ground the Lord God caused every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat;  but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.”

Genesis 3: 1-3 tells us, “Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”  The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;  but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.”’

So let’s fast forward to Proverbs 3:13-18, “Blessed is a person who finds wisdom, and one who obtains understanding. For her profit is better than the profit of silver, and her produce better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire compares with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are those who hold on to her.”

The question is why did one tree bring life, and the other tree brought death? Wisdom is God’s Word. He and His wisdom are one. So then who is wisdom? Wisdom is the Holy Spirit. In fact there are seven spirits to the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 11:2 speaks of these seven, “The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD.”

1 Corinthians 12:7-11, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,  to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He distributes them to each one, just as He determines.”

Now Yeshua, He and the Spirit are one. Ephesians 6: 17-18a says, “And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit.” So now we have gone full circle. The Spirit and the Word are one, and Yeshua is the Word made flesh. So the Tree of Life was like eating the Word. As Proverbs 3 tells us, it is better than silver or gold or jewels but long life is in her right hand and God’s riches (wisdom) which brings honor in her left hand. Yeshua is the Bread of Life and we must eat of Him (the Word), so God never told Adam or Eve that they could not eat from the tree of life. On the other hand, the tree of knowledge of good and evil was a different story because  2 Corinthians 3:7-9 tells us, “But if the ministry of death, engraved in letters on stones, came with glory so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was,  how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory?  For if the ministry of condemnation has glory, much more does the ministry of righteousness excel in glory.”

Romans 7:7-13 also says, “What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (Commandments) Far from it! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”  But sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.  I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died;  and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;  for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it, killed me.  So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.”

2 Peter 2:20-21 says, “ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Messiah Yeshua, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.”

So you see, when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, it opened their eyes to just that, good and evil, and now there was no turning back. Sin brings death, and so they now knew the way of righteousness, but their sins would only bring them death.  Today, take hold of the Tree of Life (God’s Word) and it will bring you life.
