The Number Seven Is Completion

I think we all know that God created for six days and rested on the seventh day because He had completed all of His work. The number seven is the number of completion. So let’s look at some of these sevens. Revelation 1: 4a speaks of the seven congregations (churches). “John to the seven congregations that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come.” 

These were Gentile congregations and many who still had their pagan influence upon the people. The salutation was from God Himself, who is and was and is to come. It was like when Moses went to the people and said, God said , “Tell them that ‘I Am’ sent you.” The line continues in 1:4b, “and from the seven spirits who are before His throne.” So who are these seven spirits before God? Well, it’s hard to say, but I know that it has to do with the Holy Spirit. God is One! There are not three persons for God is not a person.  Yeshua said that He and His Father are One, (John 10:30)

The Bible tells us that Yeshua and the Holy Spirit are one, (Romans 8:9-10). There is only one God! But God is unending, He is forever, He has no bounds. The many facets of God are surely a mystery, but the Bible speaks of some of these facets that make up God. It is like us in many ways, because there are many facets that make up each one of us, and we are made in God’s image. So let’s look at some possibilities. Because there are seven spirits before God, again this is the number of completion or perfection and the fact that they are mentioned in the same line as the seven congregations, they must have to do with our walk with God. For sure, one must be wisdom as Exodus 28:3 says, “You shall speak to all the skillful people whom I have endowed with the spirit of wisdom, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may serve as priest to Me.”

Wisdom is also one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:8 says,  “For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit.” Wisdom does not stand alone, for wisdom is also made up of knowledge and understanding, and so usually, where there is the one, there are the other two.

Proverbs 2:2-6 says “Make your ear attentive to wisdom; incline your heart to understanding. For if you cry out for insight, and raise your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord  gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

 Ephesians 1:17a tells us, “For I always pray to the God of our Lord Messiah Yeshua, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him.”

Revelation is also prophecy. The book of Revelation is just that, a prophecy given to John about what is to come. But prophecy can also be insight or instruction.  Revelation 19:10 says this, “Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, ‘Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brothers and sisters who hold the testimony of Yeshua; worship God! For the testimony of Yeshua is the spirit of prophecy.”

One of the gifts of the Spirit is discerning spirits, what is true and what is false. Like wisdom works with knowledge and understanding so does truth work with discernment. God is truth and we too, must walk in truth. John writes 3 times about the Spirit of Truth. John 14: 16-17a, “ I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever; the Helper is the Spirit of Truth.”

John 15:26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify about Me.”

John 16:13, “But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”

1 John 4:1 says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

1 Corinthians 2:14 says, “But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

Philippians 1:9 says, “And this I pray, that your love may overflow still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment.” 

So there is one more thing that a believer needs and that is faith. Romans 12:3 tells us that God has given us all a measure of faith.

Hebrews 11:6 says,  “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”

2 Corinthians 4:13-14 tells us, “But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written: ‘I believed, therefore I spoke,’ we also believe, therefore we also speak,  knowing that He who raised the Lord Yeshua will also raise us with Yeshua, and will present us with you.” 

Revelation 1:16 says, “In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.”

Revelation 3:1 says, “He who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, and yet you are dead.”

Zechariah 4:2 says, “What do you see?’ And I said, ‘I see, and behold, a lampstand all of gold with its bowl on the top of it, and its seven lamps on it with seven spouts belonging to each of the lamps which are on the top of it.” 

Revelation 4:5a tells us this, “Out from the throne came flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.”

Revelation 2:1-3 says this, “The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this: 

 ‘I know your deeds and your labor and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil people, and you have put those who call themselves apostles to the test, and they are not, and you found them to be false;  and you have perseverance and have endured on account of My name, and have not become weary.”

God is light and wisdom and knowledge and understanding and discernment and revelation and truth and faith which are all part of God and His light. The first thing God spoke was “Let there be light.” And all of God’s wisdom and knowledge and understanding, His revelation and truth and faith were all discerned and power went out from Him and created all things.   Revelation 1:20 gives us the answer to the stars and lampstands. “As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”

Revelation 5:6 tells us , “And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.”

Zechariah 3: 8-10,says,  “Now listen, Joshua, you high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you—indeed they are men who are a sign: for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the Branch.  For behold, the stone that I have put before Joshua; on one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I am going to engrave an inscription on it,’ declares the Lord of armies, ‘and I will remove the guilt of that land in one day.  On that day,’ declares the Lord  of armies, ‘every one of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree.’”

Zechariah 4: 8-10 also says, “Also the word of the Lord  came to me, saying,  ‘The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will finish it. Then you will know that the Lord  of armies has sent me to you.  For who has shown contempt for the day of small things? But these seven will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel—they are the eyes of the Lord  roaming throughout the earth.”

Seven horns, seven eyes are the seven spirits. The horn was a symbol of power, so of course seven horns would be complete power and eyes are for seeing and God sees all things. There is nothing hidden from Him. He has complete sight of history from beginning to end. Seven lamps, seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. The lamps are God’s Word that is a lamp unto our feet. God leads us in the path that we should walk and He lights our path so we do not stumble.God has given us everything that pertains to life and godliness. The angels of the seven churches are there to protect as Psalm 91 tells us, “I shall give My angels charge over you.” There is a spiritual battle that has to be fought and we must join in the battle with our armor on: 1. the sword of the Spirit, 2. the helmet of salvation, 3. the breastplate of righteousness, 4. the belt of truth, 5. the shield of faith and 6.our feet ready to spread God’s Word. This with, 7. The shed blood of Messiah upon us as our covering, the mantle, His robe of Righteousness, makes us complete. Don’t forget to put your wisdom, knowledge, understanding, discernment, revelation, truth and faith into action today!
